Pitching Philosophy

The main purpose of our pitching philosophy is to keep the opposing team off balance.  They shouldn’t step into the box and know the first pitch is going to be a fastball, or if the pitcher gets ahead in the count, you usually throw an off-speed pitch.  We want to keep them off-balance, so they don’t know what’s coming on any given situation.

Main points of our plan:

  • GET AHEAD OF THE HITTERS!!!  Hitters love it when they are in a 2-0, 3-0 or 3-1 count.  They know then that the pitcher is limited to what they can throw.  They way to avoid this situation is to get ahead and stay ahead.

  • Change speeds often, but don’t fall into a pattern.  Don’t change speeds on every pitch.  For example: Don’t follow every fastball with an off-speed pitch.  By doing that the pitcher is giving the hitter a pattern.

  • Establish the inside fastball.  This is a difficult pitch for most hitters to hit.  If this is established it will force the hitter to look for it on every pitch.  Once the batter is looking for the inside fastball, all other pitches and locations will have a better chance of keeping the hitter off balance.

  • Throw the fastball with different grips.  You want to be able to come in sometimes with a 4-seam and throw the 2-seam to get some movement.  By doing this it makes the batter think your fastball is jumping.

  • Being tough mentally.  On any given day as a pitcher you may not be able to throw all of your pitches.  This is where you have to be tough mentally to make it work.  Confidence is the key.  You have to believe in your ability to get hitters out.
